WELLNESS DAY EVENT: SUMMARY

PURPOSE: To help businesses to become more productive and successful by helping their employees to become healthier, more energetic and less stressed, while preventing and reducing injuries and ailments.

Our programs are based on government recommendations and up to date research in the fields of ergonomics, nutrition, exercise, health and wellness.  Each program is specifically designed to meet the unique circumstances of each organization we work with. In doing so, businesses can reduce health care costs by fostering healthy, happy and productive employees.

The Wellness Event can include part, all or a combination of the following activities:

A:    Pre-Event Site Assessment. One of our Doctors is taken on a tour of your facility with a designated representative to assess the typical work environment and identify areas of greater risk of causing stress or injury.  This allows us to customize the program to fit specific areas of need so as to maximize the benefits of the Wellness Event.

B:      Injury Prevention and Stress Management Workshops.  Employees are taught usable strategies to improve productivity, increase energy, and reduce the prevalence of ailments or injuries.

*Workshop topics and summaries are provided on the next page.

C:      “One to One” Health and Wellness Assessments.  Scheduled in 10-minute intervals, employees receive a brief health screening to evaluate and report on one’s physical, emotional and chemical stress levels. Health related questions are encouraged and will be answered.

D:    Rejuvenating chair massages.  Employees get to relax and feel appreciated for the work they do. Completed by a licensed massage therapist.

E:     Post Event Report for Employers: Based on employee surveys, a statistical breakdown is offered that reflects the percentage of employees with specific health concerns. Action steps are custom designed for the employer to effectively handle and reduce these health concerns.

RESEARCH STUDY BY XEROX CORP. SHOWS 5 TO 1 RETURN ON INVESTMENT WITH EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PROGRAMS.

Workers who participate in wellness programs are less likely to experience on-the-job injuries than workers who are not involved in such programs. And, when injuries do occur, they are significantly less serious.

A four-year study examined on-the-job injuries among 3,338 workers at Xerox’s Rochester, New York, manufacturing complex from 1996 through 1999.

Participants in the study had been employed by Xerox since 1981 and were members of the Blue Choice Health Maintenance Organization. 72% of participants were male; the average age was 55.

Of the group, 943 employees had participated in the company’s health risk appraisal program in 1998, which evaluated the worker’s health risks (smoking, obesity, drug and alcohol abuse, high blood pressure, life and job dissatisfaction,) and was designed to steer them toward a healthier lifestyle.

Among those who participated in the health risk appraisal program, only 5.6% made worker’s compensation claims; whereas 8.9% of non-participants submitted claims.

Participants in the appraisal program had an average cost per injury of $6,506 compared to the $9,842 for non-participants.

On-the-job injuries cost the United States $125 billion annually, according to a 1999 estimate by the National Safety Council — including $62 billion in lost wages and productivity, $19.9 billion in medical costs, and $16.7 billion in other employee costs. Worker’s compensation insurance cost about $42.4 billion during that year, according to the council.

Programs such as the health risk appraisal typically cost 1-2% of the company’s health care expenses.

Employers should give serious consideration to implementing such programs. According to Xerox, over a 2-year period, they had a 5-to-1 return on their investment.
